Richmond, VA, October 4, 2017 \u2013 There were 42 fatalities at all Virginia workplaces in 2016 which represents a 35% increase over the prior year. This trend is continuing into 2017 with 27 fatalities year to date. To proactively address workplace fatalities and injuries, the VMA has initiated an aggressive new safety program. One major part of that program is the recognition of outstanding safety performance by contractors to manufacturers. The VMA Safety Award was presented to 33 contractors during an awards ceremony at the 15th annual Virginia Environmental Health and Safety (VEHS) Conference (September 28).<\/p>\n
Winners of this year\u2019s VMA Safety Award are:<\/p>\n
Gold Level<\/strong> Silver Level<\/strong> Bronze Level<\/strong> In the last year, over 18,000 ISRT safety courses were completed and almost 2,000 certificates were issued to employees of participating contractors. The VMA presented fifteen gold, seven silver, and eleven bronze medal awards at this year\u2019s awards ceremony. Gold level recipients had 75% or more of their qualified workforce successfully complete the ISRT certificate on an annual basis. Silver level winners achieved 50% and bronze level winners achieved 25%.<\/p>\n The VMA Safety Award recognizes contractors that provide services to Virginia manufacturers and 25+% of their qualified workforce has obtained the Manufacturing Skills Institute\u2019s Industrial Safety Readiness Training (ISRT) certificate and had no fatalities or significant recordable injuries or illnesses reported to Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH) during the past year. ISRT provides core concepts of safety awareness for industrial workplace training, and an individualized learning plan that addresses the most common hazardous situations faced in the industrial environment. It\u2019s presented through a cloud-based, interactive, multimedia platform that is also available in Spanish. Participating companies are also provided a free learning management system to manage the ISRT certificate training for their employees so that it can be integrated it into their own safety training program. Manufacturers have access to a cloud-based identification system that will verify training credentials for every contractor employee entering their sites.<\/p>\n \u201cAll winners are rewarded with recognition in our exclusive cloud-based VMA Contractors Directory that will be marketed to 5,000 manufacturers across the Commonwealth\u201d said Brett Vassey, VMA President & CEO. \u201cOur goal is to raise the profile of contractors that have made exceptional investments in worker safety as a means of assisting them with procurement opportunities with like-minded manufacturers\u201d said Vassey. This will be a competitive award where a manufacturer\u2019s safety program will be evaluated by an expert panel.
