Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, houses some of the Smithsonian\u2019s largest aircraft and spacecraft, including a Concorde jet and the Space Shuttle Discovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Center is a popular destination, attracting nearly eight million visitors and aviation enthusiasts every year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The on-site <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/airandspace.si.edu\/multimedia-gallery\/4105hjpg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boeing Aviation Hangar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which shelters many of the museum\u2019s pieces, is the length of three football fields and reaches a height of 10 stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hangar\u2019s aging roofing membrane needed repair to continue protecting the museum\u2019s valuable aviation artifacts. But before work could begin, the workers required safe access to the roof\u2019s curved exterior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The general contractor needed a scaffolding system that could match the contour of the barrel-shaped hangar while providing safe access to the museum roof.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to their long-standing reputation for technical and creative know-how, Scaffolding Solutions was a perfect fit for the job. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The contractor reached out to the Metro Washington DC team of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scaffoldingsolutions.com\/virginia-scaffolding\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scaffolding Solutions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who provided an engineered solution that included the following benefits:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highly customized scaffolding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitigation of potential wind concerns through customized lateral supports<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strict adherence to a highly detailed milestone schedule<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inclusion of site security measures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Job completed on time and on budget<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>The Challenge<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the overall cost and short schedule, the client also wanted to ensure that their workers could safely access all parts of the curved roof.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scaffolding Solutions faced many challenges, including the building\u2019s massive size and its exposed, airfield-like setting. The scaffolding on the museum\u2019s exterior would be subjected to high wind loads because of its open location. Gusting winds could cause lateral force problems upon the curved shape of the scaffolding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scaffolding Solutions also had to maintain site security to protect the planes and the public during scaffolding construction and repair work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Solution<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2191\" src=\"https:\/\/scaffoldingsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Washington-D.C.-Scaffolding-Project-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Washington D.C. This helped mitigate the high load concerns from the wind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help ensure that all project activities were finished on time and on budget, Scaffolding Solutions created a detailed milestone schedule and shared it with key stakeholders before work commenced.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Result<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The customer was impressed with Scaffolding Solutions\u2019 innovative design. As required, the system tightly hugged the hangar\u2019s curved roofline while providing safe worker access during the roofing membrane repairs.<\/p>\n<p>After Scaffolding Solutions completed the project, the general contractor awarded them with additional responsibilities assisting inside the facility.
